GB 30677-2026
Performance requirements and testing methods for ESC systems on light-duty vehicles
Standard Introduction
GB 30677-2026 is China's new mandatory national standard for electronic stability control systems on light-duty vehicles. It was published on 30 July 2026 and takes effect on 1 January 2028, creating a defined transition period for engineering, testing and homologation.
ESC may use selective wheel braking and powertrain torque intervention to help maintain directional stability, but it does not replace the passenger-car braking requirements in GB 21670-2025. Manufacturers should use the transition to control system interfaces, representative vehicle configurations, dynamic tests, fault behavior, software and change evidence.
New Mandatory ESC Standard
Published on 30 July 2026 as China's mandatory performance and test standard for electronic stability control systems on light-duty vehicles.
Effective 1 January 2028
The standard is published but not yet effective. Manufacturers should treat the transition as an engineering, testing and homologation program rather than label current vehicles as certified early.
Stability Is More Than Braking
ESC coordinates sensing, yaw and lateral-motion control, selective braking and powertrain intervention. It is related to braking but does not replace the base braking-system obligations in GB 21670-2025.
list_alt What to Prepare
- Confirm each light-duty vehicle type is in scope
- Freeze the ESC hardware, sensors, controllers and software baseline
- Map stability-control functions to required performance tests
- Validate warning, fault and driver-information behavior
- Control interfaces with braking, steering and powertrain systems
- Test representative mass, tire and chassis configurations
- Maintain type-extension and software-change evidence
- Plan homologation completion before 1 January 2028
Who Needs to Comply?
Light-duty vehicle manufacturers selling in China, ESC and brake-control suppliers, chassis and motion-control engineering teams, homologation functions, software configuration managers, testing laboratories, and quality teams responsible for vehicle variants.
Key Requirements
Confirm Scope and Vehicle Classification
Determine whether each model and derivative is a light-duty vehicle covered by the standard, and record the classification evidence rather than relying on a model's marketing category.
Define the ESC System Boundary
Identify sensors, controller, brake actuators, powertrain torque intervention, driver controls, warning indicators, communications and dependent systems that contribute to stability control.
Demonstrate Dynamic Performance
Use the standard's prescribed maneuvers, instrumentation, loading and acceptance criteria to demonstrate directional stability and intervention performance.
Verify Fault and Warning Behavior
Test detection, warning and degraded-state behavior for relevant faults and confirm that drivers receive the required status information.
Control Cross-Domain Interfaces
Trace ESC requirements through braking, propulsion, steering, chassis sensors and vehicle networks so interface changes cannot silently invalidate test evidence.
Build Transition and Variant Evidence
Plan representative test vehicles, type-extension logic, software release controls and supplier evidence early enough to complete homologation before the 2028 effective date.
Implementation Roadmap
Confirm scope and transition population
Classify every light-duty vehicle type and derivative intended for China after 1 January 2028, then identify the programs, carry-over platforms and launch dates affected by the new mandatory standard.
Baseline the ESC system and interfaces
Freeze the relevant sensors, controller, software, braking, steering, propulsion, tires and chassis parameters. Map each required function and signal to its owner and diagnostic behavior.
Execute dynamic and fault validation
Plan representative vehicles and conduct the prescribed maneuvers, warning and fault tests with calibrated instrumentation and controlled loading, road and tire conditions.
Complete homologation and sustain evidence
Close deviations, approve type-extension logic and connect release management to conformity evidence so post-test hardware, tire or software changes receive an impact assessment.

| Reference | Primary question | Status or role |
|---|---|---|
| GB 30677-2026 | Does the light-duty vehicle ESC meet prescribed stability-control performance and test requirements? | Mandatory from 1 January 2028 |
| GB 21670-2025 | Does the passenger-car braking system meet required braking performance and system behavior? | Mandatory since 1 January 2026 |
| ISO 26262:2018 | Are hazards from E/E malfunctions managed across the functional-safety lifecycle? | Voluntary engineering standard; may support safety evidence |

Common Misconceptions
The 2028 date means engineering can wait until late 2027.
System baselines, representative vehicles, proving-ground capacity, supplier evidence and type-extension decisions require lead time before formal applicability.
Passing the base brake standard automatically proves ESC conformity.
ESC and base braking have related actuators but distinct scope, dynamic tests, system behavior and evidence obligations.
A feature name such as burst-tire stability control is a regulatory certificate.
A product feature claim must be evaluated against its stated conditions. Formal conformity requires authoritative evidence against the applicable standard.
Penalties & Enforcement
GB 30677-2026 is a published mandatory national standard with an effective date of 1 January 2028. Once applicable, nonconforming covered vehicles may fail market-access or type-approval requirements and may be subject to corrective or recall measures under applicable Chinese law. Before that date, claims of compliance should identify the evidence basis and transition status.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does GB 30677-2026 take effect?
expand_more
It was published on 30 July 2026 and takes effect on 1 January 2028. As of 13 October 2026 it is published and upcoming, not yet effective.
Is GB 30677-2026 voluntary?
expand_more
No. The official national standards catalogue classifies it as a mandatory national standard for electronic stability control systems on light-duty vehicles.
Is ESC the same as the vehicle's braking system?
expand_more
No. ESC uses sensors and control logic to detect loss of directional stability and may command selective wheel braking and powertrain torque changes. Base braking-system requirements remain governed separately, including by GB 21670-2025 for passenger cars.
Does an advertised high-speed tire-failure control feature prove GB 30677-2026 compliance?
expand_more
No. Such a statement describes a product feature or scenario. GB 30677 conformity requires the prescribed scope, maneuvers, conditions, measurements and acceptance evidence for the covered vehicle type.
What should manufacturers do before 2028?
expand_more
Confirm scope, baseline the ESC system and cross-domain interfaces, map requirements to evidence, reserve representative test vehicles and facilities, close gaps, and control later hardware, tire and software changes.
