QC/T 788-2018
Performance requirements and bench test methods of automobile pedal devices
Standard Introduction
QC/T 788-2018 is China's current recommended automotive industry standard for the performance and bench testing of brake and clutch pedal devices. Published on 4 July 2018 and effective from 1 January 2019, it replaced the 2007 edition.
It is a key component-level reference in the Maextro V800 brake-pedal bracket debate, but scope, pedal construction, fixture, loading direction and acceptance criteria must be checked. A peak measured in a media road test is not automatically a bench-test conformity result.
Pedal-Device Bench Testing
Defines performance requirements and bench-test methods for automotive brake and clutch pedal devices, including strength and durability evidence.
Recommended, Not Mandatory
The official standards platform classifies QC/T 788-2018 as a current recommended automotive industry standard, effective since 1 January 2019.
Scope and Load Direction Matter
A test result is meaningful only when the tested pedal type, mounting, loading point, direction, magnitude, repetitions and acceptance criteria match the standard.
list_alt Evidence Needed
- Confirm whether the pedal design is directly in scope or used by reference
- Document the complete pedal assembly and production configuration
- Use the specified fixture, loading point and direction
- Record applied force, hold time and repetitions
- Measure permanent deformation and inspect for cracking or damage
- Execute applicable durability and environmental tests
- Control material, tooling, supplier and design changes
- Do not compare field or media tests with bench limits without method equivalence
Who Needs to Comply?
Brake and clutch pedal manufacturers, vehicle OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, test laboratories, component-quality engineers, product-safety teams and buyers evaluating pedal-device design and production evidence.
Key Requirements
Confirm Scope
Identify the pedal construction and whether the standard applies directly or only by reference. Record any differences between the tested assembly and production design.
Control the Test Setup
Mount the assembly using the specified or representative fixture and document the loading location, direction, rate, force, hold time and repetitions.
Assess Strength and Deformation
Measure permanent deformation and inspect the assembly and support structure for cracks, fracture, loosening or other damage after the prescribed loading sequence.
Verify Durability
Run applicable repeated-operation testing with controlled loads and monitor sticking, looseness, deformation, damage and functional degradation.
Trace Production Variables
Link evidence to material grade, fiber content where relevant, molding or forming process, weld or knit-line controls, tooling, supplier, dimensions and assembly settings.
Compare Tests Honestly
Do not equate a dynamic in-vehicle emergency stop with a component bench test unless the force vector, fixture, load history, condition and acceptance criteria are demonstrably comparable.
Implementation Roadmap
Confirm pedal type and evidence scope
Identify the pedal construction, assembly boundary, mounting, materials, production process and whether QC/T 788 applies directly or is being used as a reference for another design type.
Execute controlled bench tests
Use controlled fixtures, loading points, directions, forces, hold times and cycles; capture deformation, cracking, fracture, looseness and functional behavior against the adopted criteria.
Control production and changes
Link results to material, tooling, supplier, dimensions and assembly settings, then trigger reassessment for changes or field evidence that challenges the tested boundary.

Road Event vs Component Bench Test
These evidence types can inform one another but are not interchangeable.
| Evidence | Best use | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Road or proving-ground braking event | Observe whole-vehicle behavior under stated conditions | Pedal input and component loading may not match a bench method |
| QC/T 788 bench test | Repeatable pedal-device strength and durability assessment | May not reproduce every dynamic misuse or vehicle interaction |
| Fracture analysis | Identify material, process and failure-mode evidence | Needs controlled samples and chain of custody |
| Field history | Detect real-world frequency and patterns | Absence of reports does not define ultimate strength |
Common Misconceptions
QC/T means the standard is compulsory.
QC/T 788-2018 is officially classified as a recommended industry standard.
A single force number can decide the V800 controversy.
Load direction, point, duration, cycles, assembly scope, prior damage and applicability all affect the comparison.
No customer field failures means the component cannot have a design or validation gap.
Field history is important but must be considered with exposure, reporting, test evidence, margins and the repeated failure mode under investigation.
Penalties & Enforcement
QC/T 788-2018 is a recommended industry standard and does not itself create a universal mandatory penalty. It can become contractually or internally required, and failure against an adopted specification can trigger rejection, redesign, warranty, recall, liability or supplier-remediation consequences.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is QC/T 788-2018 mandatory?
expand_more
No. The official standards platform classifies it as a current recommended automotive industry standard. It can still be adopted through contracts, company specifications or a declared validation program.
What does QC/T 788-2018 cover?
expand_more
It provides performance requirements and bench-test methods for automotive brake and clutch pedal devices. Scope and direct applicability depend on the pedal construction described by the standard.
Can a 100-to-0 km/h road test be compared directly with its bench test?
expand_more
Not without showing method equivalence. The mounting, load point, direction, force-time history, prior cycles, specimen condition and acceptance criteria can differ materially.
Does a measured peak above a nominal bench load automatically prove noncompliance?
expand_more
No. A peak observed in a different test does not by itself establish a standard result. A valid conclusion requires the prescribed setup, sequence, measurement uncertainty and acceptance criteria.
What evidence matters after a pedal bracket fracture?
expand_more
Preserve the vehicle and component, production identifiers, material and process records, software data where relevant, load traces, video, fracture surfaces, comparable samples and chain of custody before destructive analysis.
