ISO/IEC 27000:2026
Information security, cybersecurity and privacy protection — Information security management systems — Overview
Standard Introduction
ISO/IEC 27000:2026 is the current overview of information security management systems and the ISO/IEC 27000 standards family. Published on 3 July 2026 as the sixth edition, it replaced the withdrawn 2018 edition and revised the title, structure, concepts and explanation of relationships across the family.
The document is an orientation standard, not a certifiable requirements standard. Organizations use ISO/IEC 27001 for ISMS requirements and certification, then select supporting family documents for controls, implementation, risk and sector-specific guidance.
ISMS Family Overview
Explains the purpose of an information security management system and how the ISO/IEC 27000-family documents relate to one another.
Sixth Edition
The July 2026 edition replaces ISO/IEC 27000:2018. Its revised title and structure place the emphasis on overview, concepts and relationships across the ISMS family.
Not a Certification Standard
ISO/IEC 27000 provides orientation. ISO/IEC 27001 contains the auditable ISMS requirements used for certification.
list_alt How to Use ISO/IEC 27000:2026
- Understand core ISMS concepts and principles
- Identify the purpose of documents in the ISO/IEC 27000 family
- Use ISO/IEC 27001 for certifiable requirements
- Use supporting standards for controls and implementation guidance
- Keep terminology and document references edition-specific
- Confirm legal, regulatory and contractual duties separately
Who Needs to Comply?
ISMS programme owners, information-security leaders, risk and compliance teams, auditors, advisers, procurement teams and newcomers who need to select and interpret the right documents in the ISO/IEC 27000 family.
Key Requirements
Start with the Intended Outcome
Define whether the immediate need is ISMS certification, control guidance, risk management, sector guidance or another information-security objective.
Map the Standards Family
Use the overview to identify which ISO/IEC 27000-family documents address that objective and record the edition selected.
Separate Requirements from Guidance
Treat ISO/IEC 27001 requirements as the certification baseline and supporting documents such as ISO/IEC 27002 as guidance unless another obligation incorporates them.
Align Shared Language
Use current ISMS concepts and definitions consistently across policies, risk records, contracts, training and audit evidence.
Monitor Edition Status
Maintain a standards register so withdrawn editions, amendments and related-document revisions are reviewed before references or procedures are updated.
Implementation Roadmap
Define the decision
State whether the organization needs certifiable ISMS requirements, control guidance, implementation support, risk guidance or a sector-specific reference. Assign an owner and record the intended outcome.
Build the family map
Use ISO/IEC 27000:2026 to identify the relevant family documents. Record exact titles, editions, status and the role of each document in the ISMS programme.
Separate obligations from guidance
Map ISO/IEC 27001 requirements, voluntary supporting guidance, contractual commitments and binding legal or regulatory duties in separate columns so their authority is not confused.
Align language and evidence
Update policies, risk records, training, supplier documents and audit criteria to use consistent current concepts and edition-specific citations.
Monitor the register
Review the standards register at planned intervals and when ISO publishes revisions, amendments or withdrawals. Assess affected controls and records before changing references.

Which ISO/IEC 27000-family document answers which question?
Use the overview to choose the right document; do not treat every family member as a certifiable requirements standard.
| Document | Primary question | Role |
|---|---|---|
| ISO/IEC 27000:2026 | How does an ISMS work, and how do family documents relate? | Overview and shared concepts |
| ISO/IEC 27001:2022 | What requirements must an ISMS satisfy? | Requirements and certification baseline |
| ISO/IEC 27002:2022 | What information-security controls and implementation guidance are available? | Control guidance |
| ISO/IEC 27003:2017 | How can an organization implement an ISMS? | Implementation guidance |
Common Misconceptions
ISO/IEC 27000 and ISO/IEC 27001 are interchangeable.
ISO/IEC 27000 is the family overview; ISO/IEC 27001 contains certifiable requirements.
The 2026 edition is merely a vocabulary refresh.
ISO describes a technical revision with a new title and structure, added concepts and principles, and stronger emphasis on the relationships among ISMS family documents.
Using the newest overview automatically updates an ISMS.
Organizations still need to assess controlled references, policies, contracts, training and audit criteria, then approve relevant changes.
Penalties & Enforcement
ISO/IEC 27000:2026 is a voluntary overview standard. It creates no direct legal penalties and is not a basis for certification. Binding duties may instead arise from law, regulation, contracts or a separately adopted requirements standard such as ISO/IEC 27001.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the current edition of ISO/IEC 27000?
expand_more
ISO/IEC 27000:2026 is the current sixth edition. ISO published it on 3 July 2026 and lists ISO/IEC 27000:2018 as withdrawn.
Can an organization be certified to ISO/IEC 27000?
expand_more
No. ISO/IEC 27000 is an overview document. ISO/IEC 27001 contains the ISMS requirements used for certification.
What changed from ISO/IEC 27000:2018?
expand_more
ISO states that the sixth edition technically revises and replaces the fifth edition. The title no longer ends with 'Overview and vocabulary'; the structure now emphasizes the ISMS overview and relationships among family documents, concepts and principles were added, and Clause 3 contains definitions used in the overview.
Does ISO/IEC 27000:2026 replace ISO/IEC 27001?
expand_more
No. ISO/IEC 27000 explains the family and its concepts. ISO/IEC 27001 remains the requirements standard for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an ISMS.
Must every reference to the 2018 edition be changed immediately?
expand_more
The 2018 edition is withdrawn, so organizations should review citations and decide whether controlled documents, contracts, training or audit criteria need updating. Contractual or regulatory transition effects depend on the instrument that cites the old edition.
Does ISO/IEC 27000 create legal compliance duties?
expand_more
Not by itself. It is a voluntary international standard. Applicable law, regulation, contract terms or another adopted standard can create separate obligations.
