ISO/IEC 15415:2024
Automatic identification and data capture techniques — Bar code symbol print quality test specification — Two-dimensional symbols
Standard Introduction
ISO/IEC 15415:2024 is an active — edition 3 standard published by International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It is commonly used across Retail, Manufacturing, Logistics & Transportation, Food & Beverage, Healthcare and applies in Global.
Use this page to review the official documentation, current status, and the certification or assessment bodies most commonly associated with ISO/IEC 15415:2024.
2D symbol quality
Provides measurement methodologies for multi-row barcodes and two-dimensional matrix symbols.
Measured and graded
Evaluates relevant attributes and derives an overall print-quality assessment for the symbol.
Production troubleshooting
Supports root-cause work when printing, marking, substrate or imaging conditions reduce symbol quality.
list_alt Verification essentials
- Confirm whether the symbol is multi-row or matrix
- Use the applicable verifier conformance specification
- Set the aperture, lighting and other application parameters
- Measure the final symbol on the production substrate
- Record parameter grades and the overall grade
- Use ISO/IEC 29158 with this standard when direct-part-mark correlation is needed
Who Needs to Comply?
Teams that design, print, mark or verify QR Code, Data Matrix, GS1 DataMatrix and other two-dimensional barcodes for packaging, manufacturing, retail, logistics or healthcare applications.
Key Requirements
Choose the correct method
Apply the methodology for the relevant multi-row or matrix symbology and follow the governing application's test configuration.
Verify the final mark
Measure the symbol after printing or marking on the actual material, not only the source artwork or an on-screen image.
Grade and document
Evaluate the required attributes, derive the overall grade and retain equipment, setup, sample and result evidence.
Handle direct part marks correctly
Where a symbol is directly marked on a part, use ISO/IEC 29158 with ISO/IEC 15415 when better correlation to scanning performance is needed.
Penalties & Enforcement
ISO/IEC 15415 is voluntary. The required grade and test configuration come from the applicable industry, customer or regulatory specification. Poor results can cause rejected labels, unreadable product data, traceability gaps, relabelling or supply disruption.
