IEC 60623:2026

Vented nickel-cadmium prismatic rechargeable cells and batteries for industrial applications

apartmentPublishing Organization:International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)

Standard Introduction

IEC 60623:2026 is the current International Standard for vented nickel-cadmium prismatic secondary cells and battery systems made from them for industrial applications. Edition 6.0 was published on 24 August 2026 and cancels and replaces the 2017 edition.

The technical revision adds internal DC resistance testing, pulse-power calculation, constant-power measurement and determination of durability parameters. It is voluntary unless another instrument requires it, and it does not replace separate safety, installation, transport or environmental rules.

Expanded Performance Evidence

The revision adds internal DC resistance testing, pulse-power calculation, constant-power measurement and determination of durability parameters.

list_alt Decisions to Make Before Testing

  • Confirm the cell is vented rather than sealed
  • Confirm prismatic nickel-cadmium chemistry and industrial use
  • Identify cell, battery and system configurations in scope
  • Obtain the licensed 2026 normative text before defining pass criteria
  • Update test plans for the four listed technical changes
  • Map markings, designation and dimensions to controlled drawings
  • Define representative samples, charging conditions and measurement equipment
  • Separate IEC conformity evidence from destination-market legal approval

Who Needs to Comply?

groups

Manufacturers of vented prismatic nickel-cadmium industrial cells and batteries; designers and integrators of stationary, transport, telecom, aerospace or emergency-power systems; procurement and asset teams specifying performance and durability; and laboratories migrating test programs from the 2017 edition.

Key Requirements

1

Classify the Battery Correctly

Confirm that the product uses vented nickel-cadmium prismatic cells for an industrial application. Sealed industrial cells belong under IEC 60622; other chemistries and portable products require different standards.

2

Control Designation and Marking

Use the purchased standard to map required designation, markings and declared characteristics to product labels, drawings, specifications and controlled records.

3

Define Dimensional Evidence

Link applicable dimensional requirements to controlled drawings, measurement methods, sample identification and inspection records for each relevant cell or battery configuration.

4

Update Electrical Test Evidence

Incorporate the new internal DC resistance test, pulse-power calculation and constant-power measurement into the edition-specific test plan, using the normative methods and criteria in the purchased text.

5

Address Durability Parameters

Determine which durability evidence and declarations apply, record test history and conditions, and connect results to product specifications and customer claims.

6

Manage the 2017-to-2026 Change

Perform a documented gap review of legacy reports, methods and specifications, close gaps and keep the edition explicit across purchasing, test reports, technical files and customer documentation.

Implementation Roadmap

1
Phase 1schedule Duration: 1-3 weeks

Confirm scope and applicable documents

Record chemistry, vented construction, prismatic format, intended industrial use, configurations, target markets and customer specifications. Identify separate safety, installation, transport, maintenance and environmental rules.

2
Phase 2schedule Duration: 2-6 weeks

Complete the edition gap review

Compare existing drawings, declarations, reports and methods with the purchased IEC 60623:2026 text, focusing on internal DC resistance, pulse power, constant power and durability parameters.

3
Phase 3schedule Duration: 6-16 weeks

Test and approve evidence

Approve representative samples, charging and environmental conditions, calibrated equipment, methods, calculations and report templates. Execute the revised plan and resolve deviations before release.

4
Phase 4schedule Duration: Ongoing

Control production and changes

Link approved evidence to models, drawings, markings, critical materials and manufacturing controls. Reassess changes, maintain traceability and monitor the IEC record for amendments or replacement.

Choosing the Right Nickel-cadmium Standard

Start with construction and intended application; do not select a standard only because the chemistry matches.

Common Misconceptions

cancel
Myth

IEC 60623 and IEC 60622 are interchangeable.

check_circle
Reality

They separate vented and sealed industrial nickel-cadmium products and contain edition-specific evidence requirements.

cancel
Myth

IEC 60623 is a general standard for every industrial battery chemistry.

check_circle
Reality

Its scope is vented nickel-cadmium prismatic cells and battery systems; other chemistries and constructions use other standards.

cancel
Myth

The IEC catalogue summary contains enough detail to run the tests.

check_circle
Reality

The summary identifies scope and major changes, but the licensed normative text is needed for methods, conditions and acceptance criteria.

cancel
Myth

A 2017-edition report automatically demonstrates the 2026 edition.

check_circle
Reality

The sixth edition is a technical revision with new test and calculation provisions. Legacy evidence needs a documented gap review.

Penalties & Enforcement

warning

IEC 60623:2026 is a voluntary International Standard and creates no direct legal penalty. Contracts, procurement specifications, certification schemes or national regulations can separately require an edition or supporting evidence. Product, installation, transport, environmental and disposal rules remain separate assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does IEC 60623:2026 cover?

expand_more

It covers marking, designation, dimensions, tests and requirements for vented nickel-cadmium prismatic secondary cells and battery systems made from them for industrial applications.

What edition did IEC 60623:2026 replace?

expand_more

Edition 6.0 cancels and replaces IEC 60623:2017, the fifth edition. IEC identifies the new publication as a technical revision.

What changed in the 2026 edition?

expand_more

IEC's catalogue lists a new internal DC resistance test, pulse-power calculation, constant-power measurement and determination of durability parameters. The purchased text controls the methods and criteria.

What is the difference between IEC 60623 and IEC 60622?

expand_more

IEC 60623 addresses vented nickel-cadmium prismatic cells and batteries for industrial applications. IEC 60622 addresses sealed products in the same broad industrial category.

Does IEC 60623 cover every industrial battery hazard or installation rule?

expand_more

No. It is a product standard for a defined cell and battery type. Safety, installation, transport, maintenance, environmental and market-access rules must be identified separately.

Is compliance with IEC 60623 legally mandatory?

expand_more

Not by itself. It is a voluntary International Standard. A contract, procurement rule, certification scheme or national regulation can separately require it or another edition.
